NTS – Living during a time of war?

May 7, 2013 | Posted in: Homework Assignments

While Emely was in our class today, you all discussed what it would sound like to grow up during a time of war.  Listening to your cacophony of wartime noises was bone-chilling!  Can you imagine what it would be like to grow up during a time of war?

This evening, you will discuss how your childhood would be different if you lived in a warzone.  What would you not be able to do?  What challenges would you face?  How would life be different for you?  Be specific in your ideas, and be sure to proofread before posting.

When you comment on other people’s messages, be sure to add your own ideas.  (Don’t just say something like “Yeah, I agree.” or “Right!” or “Good job, 24!”

Your assignment is to post ONE original idea and to respond to AT LEAST one other person’s comment.

I might not be able to have fun events anymore because it’s a sad and violent. Maybe the Nazis would march into the house next door! Who knows? That’s why it will all be sad. I’m really hoping there won’t be a World War 3.

hello I think that it would be bad if that happens because you wouldn’t be able to have any fun 🙁

Like what kind of fun? Sports? Trips to somewhere? Tell us!

Nice work I would be really scared if the Nazis just kicked my door down too but, what do you mean by fun events like what kind?

I agree, but you also wouldn’t be able to do even everyday things like going to the grocery store of even to school.

Sorry, I meant OR going to school.

like playing outside or going to fun places like amusement parks

.I wouldn’t be able to go outside and play with my friends or neighbors.
.I would face the Nazis killing the jewish people.
.It would be different because instead of hearing the laughing of children i’m hearing screams and crying of children and adults.

You mentioned fearing that the Nazi’s would barge into the house next door. What about the fear of them barging into YOUR home?

  2. 1213-11
    May 7, 2013

I would not be able to go outside without something destroyed or being shot.
I would face the challenges of being either a Jewish person.
Life would be different because I would be stuck at concentration camps every day with little food.

    • 1213-11

Being a Jewish person not either sorry

    • jonmoss
      May 7, 2013

I like that you put yourself into the position of being a Jew during that time. We will definitely talk about how hard it was to be Jewish during that time, but don’t think that non-Jews had an easy time either. If you supported the Jews, the Nazi’s hated you too.

  3. 1213-10
    May 7, 2013

It would be bad also because if you walked outside you would have a risk of being injured or getting killed

    • 1213-9
      May 7, 2013

I agree 10 it is dangerous to go outside in a war.

      • 1213-8
        May 7, 2013

There must be some way to go outside!!! Or is there????That would be dredful.

      • jonmoss
        May 7, 2013

        If not dangerous, certainly frightening!

    • 1213-14
      May 7, 2013

I agree 10 maybe Nazis work with 2 or 3 people.

I would not be able to play baseball again because a war is going on. Also I can’t fool around and play with my friends.

    • 1213-4
      May 7, 2013

That is the worst thing I heard in my life! (literally!)

      • jonmoss
        May 7, 2013

Agreed, 4, but I think 1 was making the point that there are many daily activities (not just baseball) that we take for granted. During a time of way, a lot of those recreational activities become difficult.

    • 1213-5
      May 7, 2013

I can’t stand not being able to play baseball. 🙁

  5. 1213-9
    May 7, 2013

I would not be able to get any money because banks will be closed.

    • 1213-4
      May 7, 2013

Does this kind of matter? Money really doesn’t kind of fit here. (Sorry if this hurts your feelings 1213-9.)

      • 1213-12
        May 7, 2013

You might need money to pay for travel to leave your home and escape the war.

        • 1213-4
          May 7, 2013

Thanks for clarifying that 1213-12! 🙂

          • jonmoss
            May 7, 2013

You beat me to it, 12. Money was very important during the Holocaust. But 9 is right – you couldn’t necessarily walk into it and withdraw it. The Germans seized (captured) the money that many people had saved – both from Jews and non-Jews.

  6. 1213-17
    May 7, 2013

I would not be able to color in my map.

  7. 1213-19
    May 7, 2013

I would not want to go outside because it would be terrifying to have Nazi soldier marching
down the street. I wouldn’t be able to go to school.

    • jonmoss
      May 7, 2013

Imagine how terrifying it would be if you DID have to go to school and walk down the streets WHILE the soldiers were on patrol. Remember, unlike your community where the police are honest, trustworthy, and helpful, the Nazi soldiers were a frightening presence.

    • 1213-15
      May 7, 2013

I agree 19 because Nazi soldiers were scary and would have guns.

  8. 1213-12
    May 7, 2013

I would not be allowed to see all of my friends because they (and I) would be inside our homes so that we would not get hurt or killed by the war going on outside.

    • 1213-4
      May 7, 2013

      These are all nightmares!!!!!! 🙁

    • 1213-7
      May 7, 2013

I agree it would be really sad to go out and have a risk of being killed

    • 1213-3
      May 7, 2013

I like 12’s idea because he(she) gave lots of detail like telling that the war was going on outside.

      • jonmoss
        May 7, 2013

It’s ok to say she. 😉 And yes, I agree with 12’s description. Good insight!

  9. 1213-14
    May 7, 2013

I wouldn’t be able to do what I want to outside because Nazis could be right outside the door.

    • 1213-6
      May 7, 2013

Same 14. That would be really disappointing

  10. 1213-6
    May 7, 2013

I think my life would change because I would not be able to go outside or, in some cases anywhere. That would be really sad.:-(

  11. 1213-3
    May 7, 2013

I wouldn’t be able to do Tae-Kwon-Do because a Nazi soldier might come in and drag us away.

    • jonmoss
      May 7, 2013

But, 3, do you think it’s likely that you’d get dragged away for no reason?

  12. 1213-7
    May 7, 2013

I wouldn’t be able to go outside and play with my friends and if I go outside I would have a risk of passing away or getting injured.

    • 1213-16
      May 7, 2013

That’s right because the war is going on and if you want to stay safe, you want to stay inside.

    • jonmoss
      May 7, 2013

Yes, many people did just that!

  13. 1213-16
    May 7, 2013

I would be only a little scared because the veterans would be there to protect me.

    • jonmoss
      May 7, 2013

The veterans? Can you explain this more?

      • 1213-16
        May 8, 2013

If there was a war going on,the veterans would be fighting off whoever we were against so we should be safe because the veterans are keeping the other country away from us.

My great grand pa and my grand ma’s brother fought together not knowing they would be relatives later on in life.

    • jonmoss
      May 7, 2013

No kidding! How interesting! A lot of families have stories like this. Especially in situations when two men (back when enlisted people were always men) would be away at war together and would return home and stay friends. One would meet someone else’s friend or sibling, and there might be a wedding!

  15. 1213-22
    May 7, 2013

its kind of sad :c because you died already and you didnt get to do anything or have some fun

  16. 1213-21
    May 7, 2013

I agree 4 writing about ww2 is a nightmare. Its not fun to talk, write or post about.

    • jonmoss
      May 7, 2013

While I agree about it not being a fun topic, it is important for us to learn about our past – even the terrible parts of the past – so that we can work avoid the same mistakes in the future.

  17. 1213-15
    May 7, 2013

Living during the war wouldn’t be so fun because people would only hear fighting, violence, and shooting.

    • jonmoss
      May 7, 2013

Besides hearing these things, how would your life be different? What would change for you?

      • 1213-16
        May 8, 2013

All you can do is sit on the couch and just sitting there. When there is no war we can go to school, the park, and other places too without a war.

    • 1213-10
      May 7, 2013

I agree that would be terrible to hear those noises all day. I wouldn’t be able to sleep!

  18. 1213-20
    May 7, 2013

If I lived in a war zone I would feel like a bird in a cage.It would very difficult to live life.

  19. 1213-13
    May 7, 2013

I think that it would be hars to go to some places like, your friends house, outside to play outside in the nice weather or even going to work and going to the shop to get food.I would not like to live threw that.:(

  20. 1213-18
    May 7, 2013

I wouldn’t be able to play with any of my friends,do any extra activities,go to different places, and there wouldn’t be any lectricity. There will also be shooting ,people being hudle up together, and there will be tons of violence around me.

  21. 1213-2
    May 7, 2013

If I lived during a time of war, it would be scary because I would have to stay in my house and listen to horrible sounds like people dying, gun shots firing, tanks, bombs, and people crying. It would be a challenge for me to go to school, see my friends, and to be with my family. I would be afraid to go outside or leave my house because I might be killed, hurt, or be taken away forever.

  22. 1213-13
    May 7, 2013

oops I ment I think it would be HARD to go some places, like going to a friends house ,going outside to play,it would also be hard to sleep with all those disturbing noises,it would also be hard to go to a shop for food or to go to work.I feel bad for all the people that passed during that time. : (

I agree 10. I have the same fear too.
