How to Solve Our Problem
December 4, 2012 | Posted in: Class Updates, Homework Assignments
In class today, we talked a lot about some of the problems we have had in class with side conversations or other disruptions during lessons or work time. We reviewed our class constitution and talked about different ways in which everyone can help to make our class a learning environment in which everyone can focus and feel respected.
Please post a comment in which you explain how YOU (yourself) can help to make our class a successful learning environment. What will you do to help solve our problem? (You may have been doing this all along, or maybe it’s something new you will try to do. It doesn’t matter which – as long as we’re all working together.)
Tonight, I want you to focus on the GRAMMAR and PUNCTUATION of your responses in addition to (of course) the quality of your ideas.

I can : Not start conversation because it incourages other kids to talk. I can also raise my hand to let people know that they shouldn’t talk right now .

I like the idea, but remember that it’s all about the TIMING. Sometimes starting conversations is a wonderful thing to do (such as during Guided Reading.) But you’re right; some times, it’s a bad idea.

I will work on not having side conversations with my neighbors. In order for me to not talk to them is to not face my neighbors. That will help me not to be tempted to talk to him or her.

That was part of the idea behind our new desk arrangement! 🙂

I can help solve the problem by not talking and tell other people if they are talking and say stop talking or if they still talk they will regret that because they might get their card flipped. That is what I would do to help the problem.
P.S You should do the same.;)

I like your idea of reminding people of the possible CONSEQUENCES, rather than just telling them to stop talking.

I can help the problem to stop by being a role model and some might follow you if you were a role model. Also if you talk you will regret that because you might get your card flipped.
P.S
You should do the same.;)

I can help by putting my hand up so people can notice that the teacher is trying to teach.
Also i can help by giving a signal to my friend if they are trying to talk to me like ”at reccess.”

Good plan. I like the idea of DISTINGUISHING (telling the difference between) talking like it’s recess and talking like you’re in class.

I can: stop having side conversations and start focusing on what mr.Moss is teaching .

If there’s someone talking to me while the teacher is talking I would just ignore them

I would not talk while the teacher is teaching. Also, I would focus on the lesson and not fool around, like making paper frogs.

I agree – It’s best to avoid the origami.

I can remind my self not to talk while the teacher is talking or teaching the class.

I can help our class by not talking in class unless Mr.Moss says to.

That’s the whole plan: For us all to learn LESSONS about how to be great classroom citizens!

I can help by not talking to my neighbors unless I have to explain something to someone next to me.
[if they were out of the room.]

I really agree too 1213-6!

You’re right to remember that there are times when talking to your neighbor is important to do. MY goal is to understand what you’re doing before telling you to stop. (I don’t want to get upset with someone who is trying to help a friend who was out of the room.) As we discussed, that’s the tough part, because (sadly) teachers are not perfect!

I can not start side conversations and not fool around as much in class.

I will not have side conversations when the teacher is teaching. When someone is trying to talk
to me I will let them know they are not supposed to do it .

I can help by raising my hand so people know that they have to be quiet. I can also be an active listener when the teacher is talking, teaching, or when they’re thinking. That’s how I can help our classroom.

I love, 4, that you mentioned being an Active Listener. That’s so very important to being a good classroom citizen!

I would talk quietly during times that we are allowed to talk (besides recess). If you talk too loudly, people will have to talk over you even louder, and more people will have to talk over them even louder! This creates a very noisy class!

Good perspective, 12! I like that you thought about how to best manage times when people ARE supposed to be talking!
1213-14
December 4, 2012
I won’t start a conversation, and if I see someone having a conversation, I will put up my quiet sign to remind them.
1213-8
December 4, 2012
i would only talk when needed ,if i do talk or a friend talks i will think of the quiet sgin and put my hand up

I can not talk when we are supposed to talk and when we can talk I could just whisper. I could not do any oragomie in my desk or have any side conversations so it doesn’t distract any one.
jonmoss
December 4, 2012
Good plan. You’re right – when kids are distracting, they are not just hurting themselves; they are hurting others too.

December 4, 2012
If someone next to me was talking too much while I was trying to do my work or listen to the teacher, I would say “stop with the conversations, pay attention to Mr. Moss.” Also, when other people fidget and someone tells them to stop, you can’t keep doing it to make the person even more frustrated. Always listen to the person when they tell you when you are bothering them.

I think this is a really good point, 2. Sometimes someone can do something that they TRULY think is harmless, but then it becomes problematic for OTHERS. (Remember my story about the bouncing knee at the Pete Seeger concert?)
