Honoring our Veterans
November 12, 2012 | Posted in: Class Updates
In school today, we celebrated Veterans’ Day. We discussed how easy it is to enjoy a day off and to forget why we are enjoying the day off. Having a town meeting to pay tribute to our veterans gave us a special opportunity to recognize the true meaning of a holiday and to say thank you to people who have sacrificed a lot to help our country. I was so proud of our entire school community today!
For homework, please post a message that finishes the following sentence:
If I saw a veteran today, I would…
For the purposes of this assignment, don’t worry about strangers and not talking to strangers. (Imagine that the veteran is someone you know and that you’re allowed to talk to and interact with them.) Finish the sentence and explain what you would and would not do. Remember our “best practices!”
If you choose to comment on someone else’s post, keep your comments purposeful and thoughtful. Please – make no more than three replies total. (That means that you may post 4 messages in all: One original post and up to three replies.) This is to keep the number of website posts manageable for me as we get started in these online discussions.

If I saw a veteran today, I would ask them a lot of questions about how their time was in their wars. Was it scary to be in a war? I would not ask them too much about the bad things that happened because that would make them sad. I would be very polite with the,. I would help them if they needed anything.

Good thinking 1213-15! Everybody should do the same thing too. We shouldn’t ask too many questions to the veteran. They don’t need nightmares about the scary war.

I loved it when you said “I wouldn’t ask many about the war because it would make them sad.” Maybe you can ask them if they actually fought in the war or if they stayed in america but still is a veteran? Either way thumbs up for you!

I would not ask them if they knew anyone who died because it might remind them of bad memories.

if i saw a veteran today,I would shake thier hand and say “thank you for serving our country and risking your life for the citizens of the U.S.A.”. I know a veteran who has been to the war in Afghanistan, and Iraq (and also other far away places). He is my Mom’s friend from high school and our family has visited his family many times at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas and in Washington, DC. He has many medals and used to fly helicopters into very dangerous places to pick up and treat injured soldiers. He is a Colonel and is now in charge of the entire Fort Sam Houston, he is the boss to over 5,000 soldiers. He and his family are alot of fun, we have gotten many great tours because of knowing Colonel, including a behind the scenes tour of the Pentagon while he was working there.
