CarTalk Puzzler

May 22, 2012 | Posted in: Class Updates

Today, you worked on a Car Talk Puzzler about flying with a standby ticket.  I thought the person would be stuck in Chicago, but sure enough, they made it!  Wasn’t the solution interesting?  Your homework tonight is to share the puzzler (but not the solution) with someone at home.  It could be a parent, older sibling, babysitter, neighbor, or someone else.  See if they can solve it!

As they work, pay attention to the following things:

  • What strategies does the person use to figure out the answer?  Do they use the same strategies we discussed?  Something new?
  • Were they able to figure out the answer?

In the end, it’s ok to give the answer if the person is stumped!  Afterwards, log in, and post a comment sharing what you observed as the person at home worked on this puzzler.  It’s ok to comment on other people’s messages too.  Remember, no names!

I had my mom do it and she listed all of the numbers, but in the end she ran out of time and I had to tell her.

Did you give her a time limit??? 🙂 Or did she just need to move on to do something else?

Talking about the strategy, you said that she listed all the numbers. How did that compare to the strategy you used with 8 when you were working on the challenge?

I had my mom try to figure it out and she counted all the families and looked at the key information like we did in class. After a few times she carefully read through it she finally figured out the answer.

Some of the common strategies can be to work backwards (as you did in class) and to draw a picture (as many people did, I think). Do you think “careful rereading” can count as an actual strategy? What do you think?

9 – That’s interesting! Did it work for him?

I like that idea, 2. It’s an easy, visual way to stay organized. Did it work out for your mom?

My mom got it right in one minute or so she used the stagey of reading it backwards and marking the people how could get on the flight.

I had my dad do the problem and he got it exactly right. I noticed he jotted down the order of the people on the waiting list after the second time he read it.

I observed that my mom asked me questions when she tried to figure the puzzle. I also observed that she was really looking closely at each word so she could find clues as she was reading.

I agree that it was a good strategy to use to figure out the problem 2!

My dad thought confused, it was cool to see what he goes through while figuring out strategies to solve it, he eventually did it in like 5 minutes but it seemed like a piece of cake for him, Do this more often jonmoss! I like seeing it 😛

My mom although, had a harder time than dad but she eventually figured it out, funny thing is. She kept asking me “Are you sureeee I am not figuring this out for you” lol XD it was funny. She figured it out using the same strategy we used in class, unlike my dad WHO STOPPED READING AFTER THEY LISTED THE FLIGHT LIST D: all he read was up to there then he somehow figured it out himself and knew the question. Nice though, I liked it. And my parents probably thought in their head “How on Earth did they figure it out in class today” xD This was my response

15- OUT UNTIL I REPLY TO SOME

My Mom figured it out rather easily by using process of elimination-the same thing that 19 and I(and our sub)used to figure out the problem. It took her one minute to do this.

My mom read it once, and then told me she didn’t know the answer.

My brother read it once, told me it was easy, and gave me a wrong answer

Yeah 15 it was so much fun seeing my mom so confused but she stared at the paper for 25 mins then said she didn’t know then shetold me to ask my dad instead. First my my dad wrote every important detail down on paper then he stood there thinking then he finally found the answer a little more quicker. My dad could figure it out because mom says that dad’s part of the family is really good at math and it runs in the family!:-) It was a little funny that dad could solve it but not mom.LOL:-) Allua, choa, bye, farwell! Till next time.:-):-):-):-):-)

16 – Did the note taking strategy pay off?

14 – So asking questions was helpful, as was looking for clue worlds. Did she find any clue words.

15 – Why do you think your dad was able to infer the question?

I observed that my mom got the answer right and she used the strategy of making a list from 1 to 14, and the first 5 couldn’t make it so the 3 person group got it and that the guy was the only single rider. She kind of did it how we did it in class and she had the same theory as me. I really enjoyed reading what your Aunt Petunia’s thought!

8 – The process of elimination is a great strategy!

17 – Here’s a question: Do you think your mom’s profession gives her schema to help her to solve this puzzle?

24, 11, and 12 – It can be funny to see people working at it, yes, but remember that you were in the same situation today! 🙂

To solve the math problem (the puzzler) I asked my brother to solve the puzzler and good news he got it correct!!! The strategy my brother used to solve the problem is that he counted up everyone on the plane who were already there and he did 14/4=3.5. Since 3.5 isn’t a whole he added that friend so there are 15 people with 3 seats left. 15/3=5.

My dad wrote down the people and crossed off the people in order of who couldn’t go on and he got the correct answer!
