4:05pm update: I figured out that the filter on the website that automatically blocks junk mail (called spam) was marking all your messages as spam. I’ve turned it off. However, for safety reasons, I changed the settings so that you cannot post WITHOUT logging in. Remember, your username is “1112 – #” (like 1112 – 21) and your password is your last name. If you are having issues with your login, use the backup account I just made. The username is “student” and the password is also “student”. But it seems that everyone’s login information seems to be working well! Huzzah! 😀
When Jaime came to visit us today, we talked about Ellen and Annemarie’s friendship. Jaime read an excerpt (a passage) from the book in which Ellen and Annemarie were playing outside. In groups, you made tableaus of their first day of school, the girls at a birthday party, the girls racing, Kirsti coming home from the hospital, and the school play. Clearly, these girls are the best of friends. BFFs! Toward the end of the activity, Jaime shared one other key detail: Ellen was Jewish, and Annemarie was not. You started to learn about how Jews were treated during the Holocaust. Knowing that, put yourself into Annmarie’s position to answer the following question:
If you were Annemarie, how would you feel about being friends with Ellen? Explain.

if i were annemarie i would feel wierd but ok with it because sometimes believeing in different religions than your friend can be strange sometimes and you may think it dosent matter but you could get in a fight over it. 🙂

Huzzah! 🙂 21, you made an interesting point just now. I agree that sometimes things that we think SHOULDN’T matter can sometimes become an issue that DOES matter. Maybe that is the case for Ellen and Annemarie.

If I was Anne Marie I would feel that I might not want to be seen playing with her or even just talking to her because I wouldn’t want my family to get hurt. But I would have also wanted to help her and her family because they are probably in a much worse situation then I am.

If I was Annemarie I would feel bad for them because I wouldn’t want to play with them, like jonmoss said today, you have to be on Hitler’s side or else you are considered a ‘trader’ and like 21, I would not risk my own family even though I would really feel bad because she is my best friend! However, I would not want my family to get in trouble for helping out a girl who is Jewish because of the way she looks, or acts. I think that was a very wrong way to treat people.

If I were Annemarie I would feel scared to have her as a friend because if I was hanging out with her at her house when her family got displaced, I would be afraid that Hitler’s army might believe that I was Jewish and force me to go with her family to Concentration Camp and be a “slave” of Hitler when I really wasn’t Jewish.

Thats a very interesting question, my answer would be my family because they are closer than Ellen. That is a very hard question because Ellen was with Annmarie since she was a little girl! Jonmoss I would choose my family because since my best friend is in danger and I stand up to the people who are hurting the Jewish, I might put more people in danger like my famliy. I would want to help Ellen but I couln’t risked geting anyone killed. ( I’m sorry Ellen ) :< 🙁

If i were Annemarie i would feel okay because if your best friend isn’t the same as you they still would be your best friend. Also even if your friend was a differnt religon it doesn’t mean that you can'[t be their friend.

If I was Annemarie, I don’t think I would care much at all if my friend was a Jew and I wasn’t. I would be kind and not criticize her like Hitler and most Germans did. I would treat Ellen the same if she was a Jew are not. I would help her when times were hard for Jewish people.

I’m glad you are enjoying the new monster icons. 15 and others, you may not be able to see a comment counter, but I can in my administrator menu. Yes, I do because some people might have no families if they died (not by Hitler but just passed away) and since that they probably thought their life was way better than the Jews’ lives and wanted to help. It’s hard to explain and if I didn’t explain enough I will explain more in-class

I replied:
I am really sorry I can’t really answer that question since I read the book already, but I am going to respond anyways.
I think that people might risk themselves and their family to help the Jews because some people have Jews that are family or really close friends, and they don’t want them to die because of Hitler. They think that their friends are more important than themselves and are very modest about it. They make that choice because maybe some people feel like it’s their fault if some Jews die because they didn’t protect them, and other things such as they don’t want people to die because of hitler’s religion thoughts and feelings.

Thats actually really clever! If everyone goes on the Jews’ side they and everyone else could over-run the German and they would be forced to retreat, but there is only one problem. If that did happen maybe the German would be so angry they would plot another attack starting WWIII and that would be bad… but that idea is clever, I’ll think about that a bit more.

I really don’t understand why Hitler thought that. I also wonder why people chose Hitler to be their leader! It does make any sense! I think maybe before people thought he was a good guy, but he really isn’t. I feel so bad for all those Jews (who got killed) and Germans (who were forced to follow the mean ‘Hitler’)

Heres What I found:
first hitler was not jewish (there are rumors that his grandmother was). Hitler was born in 1889 as a fourth child to a succesfull Austrian customs officer. at the age of fouteen his father died and at the same time he droped out of school. Four years late hitler left for Vienna. IN Vienne Hitler soaked up exterme german antionalism which was strong in vienna (even though it was in austria). these extremeists strongly believed in a uninon with the germans and a violent expolusion of the “infrior” races. Hitler was impressed wit the maoyr of Vienna and his anti liberlism and anti capitalism. From Lueger and other hitler obsorbedmuhc anti-semitism, and hatred for the slavs. He wanted to destroy the jews because of his distorted view of Social Darwinsim (survival of the fitest) believing that with the destruction of the infirior races he insures the survival of the german race.
ANother reason for his hatred were his anti capitalist and anti liberalism views. He cliamed that the hews directed an international conspiracy of finance cpitalism and MArxian Socialism against German colture, german unity, and German race.
when Germany lost World War I, heartbroken, he cliamed that the jews had stabed Germany in the back. He promised to fight back…the Allies and the jews.
Hitler believed in the “aryan race” which was a german supriority of the rest of the world. He believed that the jews, the slavs and many other, would impure the german race.

The short answer to the original question is that Germany was having some rough times, and Hitler told everyone that he had a plan for how to make things better. You and I know that his plan was awful, unfair, and evil. But he shared his plan with people in a convincing way, and people really wanted to believe that he could make things better. By making Jews into the enemy, Hitler and his followers made themselves feel better. (A connection that might make more sense to you is: Sometimes someone bullies someone else because making other people feel bad makes themselves feel better. Same sort of situation in Germany.)
