Today, Jaime from The Hartford Stage came in to introduce us to Number the Stars. She pretended to be a character, Ellen, from the text. Based on how she dressed, walked, and talked, you were able to make some predictions about her character. Tonight, think about what you saw and heard, and create a Character Snapshot of Ellen. (We have Character Snapshots at our Writing Station.) Describe how you think Ellen looks and acts, and also think about what her personality traits and chatacteristics might be, based on Jaime’s portrayal. Here’s how! READ THIS CAREFULLY!

I think Ellen is a old woman because the way she acted. She acted as if she had a sore back and memories like her childhood in the book she was holding. Also I could tell because she had glasses that made me think that she had bad eye sight.

I like that you mentioned how she was thinking back on some of her memories, 14. Good observation!

I think Ellen is an old woman, and she took place in the time of World War 2 because of the way she acted of being and old woman and because of her looking in a photo albums of childhood memories. I also thought she took place during World War 2 because she said that her friend helped her a lot when she was little during World War 2.

23 (and everyone else), do you think the story mostly takes place while Ellen is an old women as Jaime portrayed her?

Nice job 14! I agree with jonmoss about how you mentioned the memories. I also like how you mentioned how she looked and her costumes. Great job 14!! 🙂

To jonmoss, maybe the story would be Ellen as an old woman, and changing the scenes back and forth between her old age and young age.

I think Ellen is an old women who is always dull. She always brings a book around with her and never seems happy. Also the way her face expression is seems like she suffered a bad and poor life. It seems like Ellen had a hard life.

I think that Ellen is an old woman because she was holiding her back as if it hurt and walking slow. Also because she said she was a kid during world war 2. That also gave me a hint. Finally I could tell because she was looking in her old photo’s of when she was a kid.

i think ellen looks elderly and she acts very sad and deperssed since as you rember from class 2day her friend passed away as you see from the memories in the book. i think her personallity is very shy but i feel she will be more exiting after her friend passing away thing goes away 😀

I think Ellen is a old and lonely woman because she looks at her album of her childhood a little sadly and when she walked she put her hands on her back like it hurt.

Wow, lots of great ideas here! It seems that a lot of you think that she has had a sad and perhaps poor life. How else might she show this if we get to “meet” Ellen again?

I think Ellen is in her 40-50 and her family was hurt bad and this takes place in WW2,she cares about every one in here life, she is very kind.

great job 13 but i dount think she is an old woman.

I agree with 13 because of the way Jaime acted she looks poor, and had a really hard life. I also agree with 14 because Jaime said that when she was around ten world war 2 was still going on. And maybe she seems so sad because she doesn’t have any family.

20, what makes you think that she isn’t as old as 13 and 11 think? What hints did you see that might suggest that she IS older than someone in their 40s or 50s? (Anyone can answer this.)
15
May 7, 2012
I think Ellen is a woman that thought World War II was hard for their family and she just acted relieved when it ended. she didn’t seem poor because she only was sad because of the fact her best friend past away and her family really helped Ellen’s so it seems to me she wasn’t poor but she did really like her friend. Also, I agree with jonmoss that she might have a sad life.

I think Ellen is a quiet old person and she is very sad because her friend just passed awawy. she also had harder times when she was a kid because that is when world war 2 started.

Interesting, 15. For anyone: Is it possible that Ellen wasn’t poor and that, as 15 suggested, she was just sad because her best friend had just passed away?
jonmoss
May 7, 2012
What made some of you think she was poor?
20
May 7, 2012
I thouht she was in her 40-50 because 40-50’s is an old number so its the samething

So when we say that Ellen is old, maybe it’s possible that we all have different ideas of what “old” is! Consider that Ellen referred to World War II, which was in the 1930’s and 1940’s. How old would someone have to be if they remembered having a friend during World War II?

Reply by 15:
Maybe, but like I posted I don’t think Ellen is old and might just be sad instead, but! She did exit the door holding her hip. That made me think she was old, but all in all… she didn’t act much to make it look like it was key and we had to know she was old.

I like how you added the part that she will feel better once everything goes on and moves on after the funeral and things, I have a connection to that also. My grandfather past away last year and I felt really bad because he was a really good guy but now of course I still think of him, I also try to keep living life and just move on, because, although I still absolutely care about him I still have to live life myself.

I think Ellen is an old woman that has had a bad past. I think this because Jamie told us that it was hard for her family during world war 2, and her friend had just died. I think she is an older woman because when Jamie acted the character out she held her hip.
I do think this takes place during mostly while Ellen is older.

I like the part that you said you think she has bad eyesight and might need glasses for help, that was a nice part. because there I do think Ellen is old, Nice example!!! 😀

I think Ellen is an elderly too, by the way she limps and has glasses.I also agree that she had a bad past because it was world war 2 and she was looking at the photo album with all the good memories when she was little.

I think Ellen is an elderly woman because the way she acted by holding her hip and the way she had sad facial expressions and how she was looking at her photo album from when she was a little girl and then she told us how
in her childhood that she was having a rough time during the war. On top of that she said that her best friend just died so that was a hint that Ellen had very sad times throughout her life.

I Think Ellen is a old women that had to face the sad times n world war 2 and it was very hard for her family to work threw and survive the war late in her life her bes friend that had been with her most of Ellens life dies and she owed her a lot and she is very sad she died.

May 7, 2012
I think Ellen is a very old women since she was 10 when world war 2 happened! I also realized the way she was crouched low and had to have her hand support on her back, she probably was very sore and old. She was also very sad because of her best friend’s death: Anne Marie. She was very happy when we asked her whats the book she was holding because she almost maybe felt connected to her friend. I also realized she said her friend helped her when the rough war happened.

Nice 19. I like that you kind of gave us a brief summery of what we saw in the act!!!! 🙂

Nice job, 16! I could imagine Ellen if I hadn’t seen somebody act her out, and I liked how you mentioned what you thought her emotions were.

I think Ellen is an elderly woman who doesn’t have many friends and is not very healthy or wealthy and is very shy. I think she also might be a college student who can’t afford much because she doesn’t have much money because she has to pay tuition, because of her large binder and scared/nervous look on her face because she may have a test tomorrow on a subject that she isn’t very comfortable with. I don’t think she is very wealthy because she looked as if she were in pain and might not be able to afford a doctor’s appointment. If I had to choose one prediction as to who she is, I would go with my first one.

I think Ellen is a young woman who is tortured by her memories of w.w.2, but then also joyful of all the memories she had with her b.f.f. It showed because of the answers she told us about her best friend. Most of my class mates think she was old because of the way she crouched low and supported her back with her hands, but I think she may have been injured in the war. That is extremely high for a possibilities because if you do not have much skima about w.w.2, you would be surprised at the number of how many children where hurt in the war. Also the way she looked at her watch, I thought she was maybe expecting someone, which may be because she is wanting to see the long lost Annmarie. The way she was looking at her feet may be because she is briefly having flashbacks of the war.

I thought she was a old woman and she was homeless ’cause she had a sweater and she was scared and like waiting for her friend’s sister and looking back at memories that she had with Anne Marie.

May 7, 2012
I think Ellen is elderly and I think she has had rough past. I think she has some issues with her health and can not afford to go to the hospital to get help with it. It looks like her best friend which has past away and know it does not look like she has any friends and she is getting really lonely and sad

I agree 8 and I also think that you did a good job telling what you were saying I really understood what you were staying

I think that Ellen is an old lady and a librarian because she had a picture book and glasses. I also think that she had a hard life and she had to work hard for everything because her parents got killed.
